Is sublimation better on cotton or polyester?

If you’re choosing between cotton or polyester for sublimation, there’s a clear winner: polyester.

Sublimation printing works by turning solid dye into gas, which then bonds with synthetic fibers at a molecular level. Polyester is a synthetic fabric, so it absorbs the dye permanently, resulting in bold, vivid colors that won’t crack, peel, or fade.

Cotton, on the other hand, lacks the chemical structure needed to bond with sublimation dye. If you try to sublimate on 100% cotton, the design will wash out quickly or appear dull and uneven.

That said, if you love the feel of cotton, you can try a poly-cotton blend, but keep in mind:

  • The higher the polyester percentage, the better the result.
  • A 65/35 poly-cotton blend will give a more faded or vintage look.

In short, if your goal is long-lasting, high-definition prints, polyester is the superior choice for sublimation.
